Port Coquitlam Community Foundation Grants Over $650,000 To New View Society To Support New Housing Initiative
Representatives from Port Coquitlam Community Foundation (PoCo Foundation) and New View Society met with Maxine Wilson to formally present $654,703.26 from the Wilson Family Fund to New View Society for housing and support initiatives.
Dawn Becker, PoCo Foundation Chair remarked, “The purpose of the Wilson Family Community Fund was to contribute towards a building project designed for housing adults with developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or other mental health issues to be situated in Port Coquitlam. Through the dedicated focus and work by Maxine Wilson and New View Society, this is now an initiative of the provincial government and New View Society. The PoCo Foundation was pleased to be a part of this positive outcome for creating greater futures in our community.”
On receiving news of the grant from PoCo Foundation, New View Society Executive Director, Tiffany Melius released the following statement: “It is with deep gratitude that we accept this grant from the Port Coquitlam Community Foundation’s Wilson Family Fund. Maxine Wilson has always been an incredible supporter and community champion for New View Society, and we cannot overstate the impact that this grant will have on our ability to better serve some of the Tri-Cities’ most vulnerable – over 650 unique individuals who live with severe and persistent mental illness.”
Earlier this year New View Society announced their partnership with BC Housing on a proposal to provide new homes for people living with a mental illness on the Kelly Avenue Housing Project. After the cheque presentation, Ms. Wilson stated “New View Society provides support for people who face mental health challenges so they can be participating members of our community. I am honoured to be part of the expanding village that recognizes and supports New View Society’s amazing contribution to our community.”
The PoCo Foundation is one of Canada’s 191 Community Foundations. Community Foundations work with donors and partners to create permanent endowment funds and then use the income to support local charities. The original capital is endowed so that it generates income in perpetuity. Community foundations help guide volunteer efforts and financial support to where they will have the greatest impact. We also work to convene local partnerships and conversations around emerging issues.
New View Society has over 45 years of experience delivering mental health support in Port Coquitlam. As a multi-service community agency, New View supports individuals needing housing, seeking employment, and living with mental illness in the Tri-Cities area.
