Theatre Society Legacy Fund
- The Port Coquitlam Theatre Society began in 1998 as a grass roots organization with a big dream – to have a professional theatre built in the City of Port Coquitlam. The dream came true in 2000, when the 336 seat Terry Fox Theatre was officially opened to the community with an inaugural gala performance event staged by the Society, with the late Betty Fox and members of the Fox Family attending as guests of honour.
- The Society officially took over the independent operation and management of the Terry Fox Theatre under contract with School District 43 in 2004. After ten busy years in this role, the Society turned the operation of the Theatre back to the District when the contract expired. While under the management of the Society, more than 5,000 community performances took centre stage in the Terry Fox Theatre and 10,000 delighted community patrons walked through the Theatre doors on average each year. During this time, the Society also awarded $10,000 in scholarships to Terry Fox Secondary School students.
- After fifteen years of supporting the performing arts, the Port Coquitlam Theatre Society dissolved in 2015. To perpetuate the Port Coquitlam Theatre Society’s long-standing aims to educate, enrich and inspire all forms of performance arts in the region well into the future, the Society has established The Theatre Society Legacy Fund – Performing Arts Grant and the Performing Arts Bursary. In 2020 the criteria of both the grant and bursary expanded to include all forms of arts. Arts is defined as a creative activity that expresses imaginative or technical skills. It produces a product or an object. The product/object of art is called a work of art, for others to experience. It includes digital media, drawing, painting, sculpting, photography, performance art, dance, music, poetry, prose, theatre and culinary arts.
- The Theatre Society Legacy Fund – Arts Grant provides grants up to $10,000 to Arts Projects/Programs within the Tri-Cities region.
- The Society Legacy Fund – Arts Education Bursary offers two bursaries at $2,000 each, to individuals pursuing higher education in Arts anywhere in the world. (candidates must have graduated from a Tri-Cities high school to qualify).
By creating these legacy funds, the Port Coquitlam Community Foundation – Theatre Society Legacy Fund aims to foster a thriving arts community within Port Coquitlam, and beyond into the Tri-Cities where the spark of creativity, imagination, insight, understanding, enjoyment and cultural diversity is ignited through the joy of the arts.
