Program Name: Mindfulness in May 2015: The Silence of Stigma Exhibit
About the Project: The PoCo Foundation funded the First Annual Youth Art Exhibition and Writing Contest produced by the BC Schizophrenia Society Foundation. This innovative art exhibit was designed to raise awareness and to educate the community about schizophrenia through art and writing. The public exhibition was held during National Youth Arts Week and Mental Health Week at Leigh Square Community Arts Village from April 30 to May 14, 2015.
In partnership with the Friends of Leigh Square Society, BC Schizophrenia Society invited Grades 9 – 12 students from School District 43 to submit art work and writing. The theme of the 2015 exhibition was “Stigma” and the artists were asked to interpret their knowledge and reflections on the topic. Sharing opinions, telling stories and reflecting on ideas through art can be a catalyst for change. The powerful pieces uniquely illustrated the idea of stigma in various and different perspectives.
